I fished for steelhead the better part of the day yesterday with our neighbor. George took pictures, which is cool, because now I have something to show you!
This is what I learned:
1. Lady steelhead (or hen, if you must) jump and flip and make a big dramatic scene before they're pulled out of the water. Imagine that. Males don't. They stay underwater the whole time.
2. A female's eyes are closer to her mouth. A male's eyes are further away from his mouth (the mouth seems quite a bit bigger).
3. Female steelhead have lots of pretty orange eggs inside. Males don't. These are supposed to be good to keep to use for fishing next time.
4. The steelhead we caught yesterday were shiny silvery rainbow-colored with hot pink accents. They were really beautiful. And ice cold.
5. Steelhead seem to prefer lures that are bright green to hot pink because our neighbor caught four nice fish in no time at all (never mind that he's been fishing this river for 20+ years...).
6. It is good to fish with a man so that he can kill the fish for you, if you intend to keep it. After today, I prefer catch and release, although if I did that yesterday, we would have eaten tuna from a can for dinner instead of steelhead fillets.
Tuesday's recipe: Steelhead fillets -- Cover a large baking sheet with foil and coat it with butter. Lay fillets on foil and brush generously with more melted butter and lemon juice. Bake in a 400 degree oven for 12 minutes, or until fish flakes when tested with a fork.
Serve with a lovely Spanish wine (check out the attached link). Incredibly delectable.
